What Kung Fu Martial Arts Has Done for Me Lisa Robertson

Here is her story on how Kung Fu Martial Arts
I started training in Kung Fu martial arts because I wanted to do something for me.
My husband was active-duty navy, and he was deployed. I was home with two small children, and basically, my cup ran empty, and I needed something to fill my soul. I had done martial arts in my 20s, and I remembered how it made me feel, and I wanted to feel that way again.
What kept me going was basically the results I was seeing and feeling. I had lost weight, I became more flexible, more confident, stronger, and I liked that. That’s what I had remembered from my 20s, and it felt good to be in my 40s and feeling that way again.
I think there have been several surprises along the way. First off, that I was able to not only refill my cup, but also to achieve goals – black sash – with, also, too, future goals of becoming second-degree, and continue on with that. I see it as a lifelong journey for myself.
I think I’m a more confident person. Before, I was more of a behind-the-scenes kind of support person. Now, I have the confidence to stand out in front of a group, and speak, and share Kung Fu, and martial arts with students. I’m definitely much stronger, physically, mentally, emotionally. I’m also surprised, too, how much of the martial arts apply to my regular, everyday life. All these skills that I’ve learned on the mat do translate into everyday life.
I would tell a woman that maybe is a little bit afraid or scared to try martial arts to come on in. One of the beautiful things about doing martial arts is everyone remembers what it’s like to be a beginner. It’s not something to be afraid of. It does build that self-esteem. It does build that confidence. You become stronger, more self-assured. There are so many benefits to just coming in. I would say just be bold, come in and try it, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
